The film explores both the recent past of the Hawaiian Islands and the roots of the Hawaiian culture. Interwoven with the story of Aikau is the story of the decline and re-birth of the Hawaiian culture. He won several surfing contests including the 1977 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship.Īikau's life is encapsulated in the phrase "Eddie Would Go." There is a lot of footage of Aikau surfing 30 to 50 foot waves, particularly at Waimea Bay on Oahu. ![]() During a period when most of the surfers were American or Australian, he became famous for surfing the big Hawaiian surf.
